Can a Portuguese pharmacy dispense a foreign hair-loss prescription?

A prescription issued in one EU country is valid in other EU countries, but dispensing applies Portuguese rules.
The medication must be authorised or available in Portugal and the prescription must identify the patient, prescriber, active ingredient, form, quantity, dose and regimen.
A foreign electronic prescription cannot always be read in Portugal; Paper copy or an interoperable MyHealth@EU system may be required.
Prescriptions from non-EU countries do not have the same automatic recognition and must be consulted with the pharmacy.

Prescriptions from the European Union

European regulations allow a prescription issued by a professional from a Member State to be presented in another EU country. The Portuguese pharmacy must apply Spanish legislation and may need to verify authenticity, data, equivalence and availability. A foreign brand can be called something else; the active ingredient is essential.

Name, qualification, contact, professional address, country and signature of the prescriber

Common name, form, quantity, dosage and schedule of the medication

If data is missing or there are doubts, the pharmacist may not dispense until verified. European validity does not guarantee that the same brand or presentation exists.

Electronic prescriptions, paper copies and non-EU countries

E-prescriptions only work directly when national systems are interoperable. European information recommends requesting a paper copy if it will be used outside the country of issue, unless there is an operational exchange.

A prescription from the UK or another non-EU country does not automatically benefit from the general EU cross-border prescription rule. The pharmacy must check if it can accept it in accordance with Spanish regulations; Sometimes a new assessment and prescription valid in Portugal will be necessary.

The pharmacy makes the final decision according to the regulations, authenticity and the medicine. Confirm before moving.

Applied to hair treatments

Oral finasteride requires a prescription. Minoxidil can have different conditions depending on its presentation. Dutasteride 0.5 mg is authorised in Portugal for benign prostatic hyperplasia, not for alopecia; A foreign prescription does not convert an unauthorised indication into a Spanish indication.

Bring the medicine packaging or clinical report, avoid ordering only one brand and do not buy medications from unauthorised websites if the pharmacy cannot dispense them.

Portugal-specific pointA prescription issued in another EU country can generally be recognised in Portugal when it contains the required patient, prescriber and medicine details. Dispensing still follows Portuguese law, availability and the pharmacist’s professional checks; some cross-border e-prescriptions are interoperable, while others may require a paper copy.
