Hair-loss treatments for women
Guide to female pattern alopecia, telogen effluvium, minoxidil, hormonal assessment and individualised options.
The essentials in less than a minute
- Female hair loss is not a single diagnosis: pattern alopecia, effluvium, alopecia areata and inflammatory processes require different approaches.
- Topical minoxidil may be useful in female pattern alopecia depending on presentation and evaluation.
- Finasteride 1 mg is not indicated for women and did not demonstrate efficacy in postmenopausal women in the technical information sheet consulted; In addition, there is serious risk during pregnancy.
- Irregular periods, acne, excess hair, anemia, or thyroid symptoms can change the evaluation.
Recognize the pattern
Female pattern alopecia usually widens the part and reduces density at the top, often maintaining the frontal line. Telogen effluvium causes more diffuse shedding after childbirth, illness, surgery, weight loss, or stress. The plaques and scar require further evaluation.
Common options
| Option | When is it considered |
|---|---|
| Topical minoxidil | Frequent choice for female pattern; Concentration and schedule depend on the product. |
| Correct triggers | Confirmed deficits, illness, extreme diet or associated medication. |
| Antiandrogen treatments | Only in selected cases, with prescription, contraception when appropriate and specific control. |
| Camouflage or transplant | Cosmetic or surgical options after defining stability and diagnosis. |
Pregnancy and hormones
Finasteride is contraindicated during pregnancy and pregnant women should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Finasteride 1 mg is not an approved treatment for female hair loss. Other antiandrogens should not be started without specialized evaluation.
Irregular periods, infertility, severe acne or hirsutism may warrant endocrine evaluation, but not all women need hormonal testing.
Minoxidil and pregnancy
The decision during pregnancy or breastfeeding should follow the product information and clinical advice; security should not be assumed because it is applied topically.
Realistic tracking
The response is valued in months with standardized photos. Irritation, facial hypertrichosis, or a routine that is difficult to maintain may require adjusting the option. A rapid loss, inflammation, pain or loss of eyebrows requires dermatology and should not be treated as pattern alopecia without further ado.
