What happens when you stop finasteride or minoxidil?
What can happen when stopping finasteride or minoxidil, when benefits are lost, and how to plan follow-up.
The essentials in less than a minute
- These treatments maintain benefits while used; They do not definitively eliminate the androgenetic predisposition.
- After stopping finasteride, the benefits begin to disappear around 6 months and the previous state can be recovered in 9–12 months.
- After stopping minoxidil, growth may cease and return to baseline in approximately 3–4 months.
- Discontinuing due to an urgent adverse effect is different from abandoning without a plan due to fatigue or lack of results.
Why is the benefit lost?
Androgenetic alopecia is a sustained process. Finasteride reduces a hormonal signal while taking it; minoxidil sustains favorable growing conditions while applied. When they are removed, the underlying process once again predominates and the hair maintained thanks to the treatment may be lost.

Should we reduce little by little?
The Summaries of Product Characteristics (SmPCs) do not propose gradual dose reduction as a universal requirement to preserve hair. The important thing is why it is suspended and what alternative exists. Reducing applications without a plan may simply decrease effective exposure.
If significant mood changes appear during finasteride 1 mg, the European recommendation is to discontinue and consult. If dizziness, chest pain, palpitations or swelling occur with minoxidil, evaluation is needed.
Don’t compensate with double doses
Restarting or doubling a regimen after a break does not immediately recover lost time and may increase adverse effects.
Plan for stopping treatment
Document the starting point, agree when to review, and define whether to change options or observe. Some people prefer to accept natural evolution; others need an alternative. The decision must respect cosmetic priorities, health and the ability to maintain treatment.
