Wegovy tablets: what is known and when they may be available
European regulatory status of oral Wegovy, differences from the injection and availability in Portugal.
The essentials in less than a minute
- In 2026 the European authorisation of Wegovy was expanded to include a daily oral formulation for adults.
- European approval does not guarantee immediate availability in all Spanish pharmacies.
- The tablet is taken on an empty stomach after at least 8 hours of fasting and requires waiting 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medications.
- It is not an automatic replacement of the pen: the pattern, absorption, tolerance and availability are different.
Regulatory status in Europe
In May 2026, the EMA’s human medicines committee recommended expanding Wegovy to one daily tablet for weight management. The European Wegovy page updated in August 2026 already describes tablets for adults along with injectable pens.
How to take the oral formulation
According to the EMA, the tablets are taken once a day on an empty stomach, after at least eight hours of fasting. 30 minutes should pass before eating, drinking or taking other medications. This discipline influences absorption and is not equivalent to “taking a pill when I remember.”

Will it be better than the injection?
It cannot be answered by preference for needles or pills alone. A strict daily schedule may be more difficult for some people and more comfortable for others. Digestive tolerance, response, interactions with the morning routine and the experience of the professional also matter.
You should not change one formulation for another, split tablets, use oral semaglutide from another indication as a substitute, or adapt equivalences on your own.
How to check actual availability
Before presenting the product as available, three levels must be verified: European authorisation, inclusion and record in CIMA/AEMPS, and real commercial availability in pharmacies. An approval notice is not equivalent to stock.
Avoid unverified online purchases
The demand for new products favors counterfeits and illegal offers. Wegovy is prescription-only and must be obtained through legal pharmaceutical channels.
