Ill on holiday in Spain? When to ask an English-speaking doctor

A sore throat, itchy rash or other mild illness can disrupt a holiday. Know when to ask a pharmacist, an English-speaking doctor or urgent services.

Short answer: For a new illness, choose a doctor assessment when pharmacy advice is not enough; urgent symptoms need immediate in-person help.

I am ill on holiday in Spain. What should I do first?

Decide whether this feels minor, needs a timely clinician review, or is urgent. A mild sore throat, itchy patch or stomach upset can be unsettling when you are abroad. A pharmacist may help with a simple self-care product; an English-speaking doctor can assess symptoms by phone or video when a diagnosis or prescription decision is needed. An emergency department is for problems that need urgent in-person care.

PharmacyAsk about over-the-counter relief for straightforward symptoms, medicine interactions and when to see a doctor.
Online doctorUseful for a non-emergency symptom assessment, advice and a prescription if clinically appropriate.
Urgent careNeeded for severe symptoms, examinations, tests or treatment that cannot safely wait or be done remotely.

Emergency? Call 112 for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, a rapidly spreading rash with serious illness, or other urgent symptoms. An online appointment cannot replace emergency care.

Sore throat, itchy rash or feeling unwell: practical examples

For a sore throat, fluids and suitable pain relief may help. Most sore throats do not need antibiotics; a clinician should assess severe, persistent or unusual symptoms. An itchy rash may have several causes, including irritation, allergy or infection. Photograph it in good light, note when it began and mention new medicines, foods or products. If the rash comes with breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, faintness or a person who is very unwell, seek urgent help.

Online assessment has limits. A doctor may ask you to attend an in-person clinic for a throat swab, examination or testing, or go straight to urgent care if your symptoms warrant it. Do not wait for a video slot if a serious symptom is developing.

Why speaking your own language helps

If you are searching for a “tourist doctor near me” or an English-speaking doctor in Spain, the important question is which kind of assessment your symptoms need. Describe the onset, severity, medicines, allergies and what has changed in words you are comfortable using. Clear communication helps a clinician understand the history, explain uncertainty and agree a plan. Costa offers English-speaking telephone or WhatsApp video consultations in Spain; the listed online consultation is €39. A prescription, if appropriate, is part of that medical decision, while the medicine is paid for at the pharmacy.

Can I claim the consultation on travel insurance?

Possibly. The insurer decides whether your policy covers this illness, this type of consultation and any excess or pre-existing-condition rules. Check the policy and contact its assistance line when required, especially before more costly treatment. Ask Costa for a dated invoice/receipt and a clinical report or consultation summary, and keep pharmacy receipts, prescription details and proof of payment. These documents support a claim; they do not guarantee reimbursement. A GHIC/EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance.

  • Your policy number and insurer assistance contact
  • Dated medical invoice and payment receipt
  • Clinical report or consultation summary and prescription where issued
  • Pharmacy receipt for medicines bought
  • Any claim form or prior-authorisation reference requested by the insurer

How Costa can help from your hotel

  1. Choose an appointment and describe your symptoms.
  2. Speak with an English-speaking doctor by phone or video.
  3. Receive advice, a plan and, if clinically appropriate, a local prescription.
  4. Use a pharmacy for the medicine; seek in-person care if the doctor recommends it.

For an established regular medicine that you simply forgot, the separate €25 repeat-prescription review may fit better. Read the forgotten medication guide.

Questions travellers ask

Can a tourist use an online doctor in Spain?

Yes, Costa's service is for visitors as well as residents. Whether remote assessment is suitable depends on the symptoms.

Will I definitely get antibiotics?

No. A doctor decides if they are indicated after assessment. Many sore throats are viral and do not benefit from antibiotics. Learn how antibiotics are prescribed.

What if I need a physical examination?

The doctor may advise an in-person clinic, test or urgent service. Telemedicine is not the right route for every symptom.

Will travel insurance refund me?

Only your insurer can confirm coverage. Keep the clinical report, invoice and receipts and check your policy.
