Hair loss after rapid weight loss or during GLP-1 treatment
Why diffuse hair loss may appear after rapid weight loss or during treatment with GLP-1 and how to assess it.
The essentials in less than a minute
- Marked weight loss and nutritional restriction can trigger telogen effluvium, a diffuse and delayed hair loss.
- European Wegovy information includes hair loss as a common adverse reaction.
- Evaluation data linked many episodes to greater weight loss; They do not allow each case to be attributed to a direct effect of the medication.
- A GLP-1 should not be suspended or supplements should be started blindly: the rate of loss, intake, symptoms and other causes must be reviewed.
The delay explains the confusion
Telogen effluvium usually appears weeks or months after a trigger: illness, surgery, physiological stress, extreme diet, or marked weight loss. That is why the fall can begin when the person feels better or when the weight has already stabilized.
It is usually diffuse, with more hair when washing or brushing, and can coexist with androgenetic alopecia.
What the Wegovy data says
The European technical information sheet includes hair loss among the common adverse reactions. In the development program, the evaluation report noted more episodes with semaglutide 2.4 mg than with placebo and an association with greater weight losses. The report itself considered a simple direct effect unlikely.
This does not allow diagnosis over the Internet or exact extrapolation of the risk to each GLP-1.
Do not stop treatment without talking about it
Stopping can affect weight control and does not immediately correct the hair cycle. First you have to assess severity, nutrition and alternatives.
What to check
Analysis is not mandatory in all cases. They are requested if the history suggests anemia, deficiency, thyroid disorder or another disease.
Prognosis and management
When the trigger is corrected, telogen effluvium usually improves, but the hair takes months to regain visible volume. An adequate diet, avoiding excessively rapid losses and treating digestive symptoms are part of the plan. Plaques, scars, pain, inflammation or loss of eyebrows require a different dermatological assessment.
