What is a Repeat Prescription?

A repeat prescription is for medication you already take regularly as part of an established, long-term treatment. It is not for a new illness, new symptoms or a new medication request.

How repeat prescriptions work in Portugal

For long-term medication refills or travellers who forgot their regular medication. Not for new symptoms or antibiotics.

€25 Up to 4 medications per appointment Same-day review Portuguese electronic prescription

Step 1 — Book a repeat prescription appointment

Book a day and time. In “Comments”, list up to 4 medication(s) with dose (e.g. diazepam 5 mg).

Please check your name, date of birth, email and phone number. No call or video link — the doctor reviews your request at the appointment time.

Step 2 — Send evidence (new patients / tourists)

If we have not prescribed this for you before, send proof (for example, a health-app screenshot or medication box label) showing your name, medication and dose.

Option A
Attach screenshot/photo/PDF
Option B
Upload photo/file in WhatsApp

If suitable evidence is already held on your Costa Medical Services patient file, you do not normally need to send the same document again unless our medical team requests updated evidence.

Step 3 — Doctor review (same day)

A doctor reviews your request at the appointment time. Repeat prescriptions are reviewed the same day whenever possible.

If we need clarification — for example, the Portuguese brand name, equivalent medicine, dose or supporting evidence — we’ll contact you by email or WhatsApp.

Step 4 — Collect your medication from a pharmacy in Portugal

If approved, your Portuguese electronic prescription details are sent to you.

Present the relevant prescription information at a pharmacy in Portugal to obtain your medication.

Check your email and spam/junk folder if you are waiting for information from us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for repeat prescriptions in Portugal.

Can I get a repeat prescription in Portugal as a tourist?
Yes. If you normally take long-term medication and can provide suitable evidence when required, you can request a medical review for a Portuguese repeat prescription.
I forgot my medication on holiday in Portugal — what should I do?
Book a repeat prescription appointment and provide evidence of your regular medication if we do not already hold suitable evidence on your file. The doctor will review the request and, if appropriate, issue a Portuguese prescription.
My bag was lost or stolen with my tablets — can you help?
Yes. Book a repeat prescription and provide supporting evidence of the medication you normally take if required. The doctor can review whether a Portuguese prescription can appropriately be issued.
How do I get a prescription refill in Portugal?
If the medication is part of an established treatment, book the Repeat Prescription service. If you have new symptoms or a new medical problem, book an online doctor consultation instead.
What evidence can I send?
Examples include a previous prescription, a screenshot from your health app, a medication box or dispensing label showing your details, or a medical letter confirming your medication and dose.
What if Costa Medical Services already has my evidence?
If we already hold suitable supporting evidence for that medication on your patient file, you do not normally need to send the same document again. We will contact you if updated information is needed.
Can I use a UK or NHS prescription directly in Portugal?
A UK prescription or NHS App record can be useful as supporting evidence of your established medication. The Portuguese doctor still makes an independent clinical decision about whether a local prescription can be issued.
Can I get antibiotics through the repeat prescription service?
Not for a new infection or illness. Antibiotics for new symptoms require an appropriate doctor assessment. Please book an online doctor consultation.
I think I have a UTI, sore throat or ear infection — should I book repeat?
No. These are new symptoms and require a medical assessment. Please book an online doctor consultation, even if you have experienced similar symptoms previously.
Can I request sleeping tablets as a repeat prescription?
If sleeping medication is part of your established treatment, the doctor can review a repeat-prescription request. Supporting evidence may be required. A first-time request requires an appropriate doctor assessment.
How quickly will my request be reviewed?
Repeat prescription requests are reviewed the same day whenever possible. Timing may vary if the doctor requires clarification or further supporting information.
Can I include several medications?
Yes. One repeat prescription appointment can include up to four regular medications for the same patient.
Do I need a telephone or video call?
No routine telephone or video call is required for a straightforward repeat prescription request. The doctor reviews your request at your booked appointment time. If additional information is needed, our team may contact you.
Can every controlled medicine be prescribed online?
No. Some medicines are subject to additional prescribing requirements and may require further assessment or an in-person medical visit. The doctor will advise you if the requested medicine cannot appropriately be issued through this service.
I have not received anything after my review — what should I do?
Check your spam/junk folder and confirm that the email address entered when booking is correct. If you still cannot find the message, contact Costa Medical Services and our team will help.
Can I use this service anywhere in Portugal?
The service is online, so patients can submit a repeat prescription request while in Portugal. Prescription dispensing remains subject to the applicable Portuguese prescribing and pharmacy requirements.
Is a prescription guaranteed when I pay for the review?
No. You are paying for the medical review. The doctor makes the final clinical decision about whether the requested medication can appropriately be prescribed.
