A peptide in plain language
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids: think of amino acids as beads and a peptide as a short string of beads. Some peptides act as signals in the body. The word describes a type of molecule, not a quality badge, treatment or guarantee. The NIH definition is a useful starting point.
Yes: semaglutide in Wegovy and tirzepatide in Mounjaro are peptide-based medicines. They are manufactured, studied and authorised as specific products with particular uses and dose schedules. A vial sold online as a “research peptide” does not inherit their evidence or approval.
Why do people talk about GLP-1 peptides?
GLP-1 is a hormone involved in appetite and blood-sugar regulation. Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist; Mounjaro activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Medicines in this family have produced substantial average weight changes in clinical trials, which has brought “peptides” into everyday conversation. But different medicines have different indications, risks and instructions.
Wegovy injection trial: average change
What makes a medicine different from a trend?
For a medicine, regulators assess manufacturing quality, dose consistency, clinical benefits, adverse effects and instructions for use. A social-media claim or laboratory label does not replace those checks. In Spain, medicines requiring a prescription need a clinical assessment and a lawful pharmacy route. If a site sells a prescription GLP-1 product without a prescription, that is a warning sign, not easier access.
What should a patient do next?
Ask a clinician whether an authorised treatment fits your health history and goals. For Wegovy, the oral option and injection option have different routines. You can use the following number as a way to discuss your own progress, not as a prediction from a trial.
Calculate your percentage weight change
This is a mathematical measure of your own change. It does not predict a medicine’s effect or replace clinical follow-up.Peptide, hormone and medicine are different labels
Some natural hormones are peptides. A medicine can be engineered to imitate or modify a hormone signal, but its behaviour depends on its structure, dose and delivery. The fact that a compound binds a similar receptor does not establish the same benefits or side effects as an approved product. Think of “peptide” as a broad chemical description, not the name of a treatment.
When someone recommends a peptide for fat loss, skin, recovery or “longevity,” ask for the exact substance and a human clinical trial for that claimed use. Then ask whether the precise finished product is authorised in Spain. These questions are more informative than a category name or a before-and-after photograph.
What about BPC-157, CJC-1295 and TB-500?
These names often circulate in wellness and recovery discussions. They are not interchangeable with authorised GLP-1 medicines for weight management. The US FDA has identified potential safety concerns and limited human data for BPC-157 and CJC-1295 in compounding; that US assessment is not a Spanish marketing authorisation. Before considering any named product, check Spain’s AEMPS CIMA medicine register and ask a clinician for evidence for the exact proposed use. Avoid assuming an overseas “research” listing makes it a tested patient treatment.
