What is it

What are sexually transmitted infections?

STIs can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact. Some cause discharge, pain, ulcers or rashes, but many cause no symptoms. A medical assessment is needed to confirm the cause.

Flow or discomfort

Unusual discharge, painful urination, itching, or pelvic pain may require medical assessment.

Lesions or rash

Blisters, sores, warts, or genital rash should be evaluated.

Also without symptoms

A risk exposure may warrant medical advice even if you feel well.

!

When you need urgent or in-person care

An online consultation should not delay urgent care. Seek urgent medical help if you have:

  • possible exposure to HIV in the last 72 hours: seek urgent care to evaluate PEP;
  • severe pelvic pain, fever, fainting, heavy bleeding, or painful pregnancy;
  • sudden or intense testicular pain or swelling;
  • recent sexual assault: go to an urgent or specialized service.

In an emergency, call 112.

Clinical assessment

What the doctor will check

The decision is based on your symptoms, history and risk level:

Type and date of exposure and condom use.
Symptoms, possible pregnancy and contraceptive method.
Previous diagnoses, vaccinations and history of STIs.
Medications, allergies and recent treatments.
What assessment, treatment or referral is appropriate.
Online consultation

Start with a telephone or video consultation

The online consultation can assess risk and organise the next step. Depending on the exposure, a sexual health clinic, an in-person examination or a laboratory assessment may be necessary.

Avoid sex without a condom until you receive guidance and, where appropriate, results and treatment.

Treatment

STI guidance and treatment

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, your history, allergies, medication and possible contraindications. The consultation does not guarantee a prescription.

Individual assessment

The appropriate next step depends on the possible infection, the site of exposure and the time elapsed.

Individual decision

Specific treatment

Antibiotics, antivirals or other treatments are only indicated according to the diagnosis and clinical assessment.

Individual decision

Couples and prevention

It may be necessary to inform and treat partners, use condoms, and review vaccines or HIV prevention.

Individual decision

Do not use leftover medication or repeat an old treatment on your own. If medication is prescribed, you will receive the private electronic prescription through PEM to use it in pharmacies in Portugal.
