HPV and genital warts: assessment and prevention
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is very common. Some variants cause warts and others are related to cellular changes that require monitoring.

The essential
- Most HPV infections do not cause symptoms.
- Genital warts can be evaluated, but some lesions require exploration.
- Vaccination and screening programs reduce risks.
Possible symptoms
- Lumps or warts on the genitals or around the anus.
- Itching, discomfort, or bleeding from an injury.
- Changes detected in cytology.
- There are often no symptoms.
Tests
There is no single HPV test for all situations. The doctor will guide according to sex, age, injuries and screening program.
Treatment and follow-up
There is no medication that directly eliminates the virus. Warts and lesions can be treated in different ways after clinical evaluation.
When to seek urgent or in-person care
Request in-person care for persistent bleeding, painful or rapidly growing lesions, pregnancy, or immunosuppression.
An online consultation can confidentially guide, review exposure, and coordinate testing or treatment. It is not a substitute for an examination or test when necessary.
